City Walk Tours
ABOUT ARTHUR NATHAN
Born in South Africa and raised in the Cape Town colored township of Steenberg, I regard my work as a city guide an integral part of my own life journey and as a person of color in South Africa. This is our story expressed in a historic city center and Bo-Kaap walk.
Historic City Walk
Cape Town is the Mother of all South African city's. Having its beginnings in the mid 17th century as a refreshment outpost for the VOC, it was never intended to grow into a settlement of any sort. Three hundred and seventy years later what started out as an outpost has grown today into a country boasting a pop count of 61 million people. Our walk takes us past the Castle and onto the Slave memorial where we explore Cape Town as a society dependent upon slave labour. The company's garden reveals the impact of British colonialism and the exploits of British business magnate Cecil John Rhodes. Before we conclude our walk we will be confronted by the bizarre practices of the race classification board. Here a family could be split on the bases of race classification. Finally, as we step onto historic Greenmarket square we are immersed into the vibrancy and diversity of a post Apartheid South Africa. Today immigrants from all over Africa display their trade , some produced locally or otherwise imported from the continent. A mix of trade and restaurants provide a refreshing stop off even today for the weary traveler.
Bo-Kaap Discovery Walk
A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots:

A visit to the Bo -Kaap today will reveal a touristic attraction of brightly painted houses and innovative home businesses showcasing Cape Malay cooking classes and and an assortment of traditional Cape Malay paraphernalia. Certainly a far cry from its early beginnings, The Bo- Kaap history is steeped in The Cape of Good Hope's Slave History. From its highest point on Waal Straat, the Slave Lodge is a stark reminder of Cape Town's slave trade and the heart wrenching legacy of the many people crammed into the cargo holds of Slavers( a slave ship) transported across treacherous seas to be sold as property. This is a walk of discovery and the story of a resilent people who have over time tuned the lime bitterness of their past into a joy filled tweede nuwe jaar festival of sweet lemonade.
